About the University of Greenwich

Greenwich, where time begins

London is the number one city in the world for students – and at Greenwich, you’ll experience it at its best. 

Greenwich offers the perfect mix of city life and countryside charm. Study in London and enjoy everything from world-famous landmarks and museums to buzzing nightlife, shopping and culture. Many of the capital’s museums and galleries are free to visit, and there’s always something new to discover. Greenwich is also home to The O2 where world famous music artists and shows perform.

Just outside the city, Kent gives you space to explore. From scenic countryside and historic towns to coastal resorts, castles and cathedrals – there’s plenty to enjoy when you want a change of pace. The Medway campus has great transport links and is close to the historic town of Rochester.

Campus Life

The University of Greenwich offers three contrasting campuses in southeast London and Kent, each with excellent facilities for work and play.

Each location has great public transport links, making it easy to travel between campuses, explore London, or enjoy Kent’s coast and countryside. 

  • Greenwich campus is only 25 minutes from Central London. The Dreadnought Building is the student hub with open spaces, Cafe, a basement bar, gig venue, and plenty of room to study and socialise.
  • Avery Hill campus is located in Southeast London and 30 minutes from Greenwich. It offers excellent teaching and sports facilities, with recent £14 million upgrades including new buildings, clinical skills labs, and floodlit all-weather pitches. It is also home to the Student Village with on-site accommodation, a café, student bar, and social spaces. 
  • Medway campus in Kent is around one hour from Greenwich and has a large library and industry-standard labs for science, engineering, pharmacy and natural resources. Everything is close together, and student life centres around The Deep End, a lively social hub with events like comedy nights, concerts, and quizzes.

Home at Greenwich

With a range of comfortable and modern rooms close to campus, the University of Greenwich provides high-quality accommodation perfectly suited to your needs. 

Living on campus in halls of residence is a great way to meet new people and make lifelong friends. At the Greenwich campus, there are several accommodation options, all within easy walking distance of lecture halls, social spaces and transport links or via a student shuttle service.

Cutty Sark Hall is located above the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station, right in the heart of Greenwich. It offers 231 single bedrooms, each with en-suite shower and toilet facilities. Students live in shared, self-catered flats, and the surrounding area is filled with shops and restaurants just minutes from the main campus. 

McMillan Student Village is around 10 to 15 minutes on foot from both Greenwich town centre and Deptford High Street. This residence accommodates students from several nearby colleges and features a large common room where residents can relax, study and socialise.

Daniel Defoe Hall sits next to Greenwich rail and DLR station, approximately 15 minutes from campus. It includes 358 en-suite rooms in a range of styles, from shared flats to studios and two-bedroom “studio-style” flats. The building also offers two communal spaces and a small on-site gym for residents.

Clubs, Societies and Student Life 
At the University of Greenwich there are over 100 student-led clubs and societies from sports teams and cultural groups, to performance and hobby-based societies, there are endless ways to meet people, try something new and build confidence. Taking part in a society helps you develop teamwork, leadership and communication skills, all valuable experience for your future career. 

Greenwich Students’ Union 
The Students’ Union is run by students, for students. It represents your interests, offers support and brings the student community together. You can take part in sport, performing, activism or socialising, the Students’ Union helps you make the most of your time at university. 

Sport and Fitness 
Sport is a big part of life at Greenwich whether you want to compete or just keep fit, there is something for everyone. You can choose from football, rugby and lacrosse to cheerleading, archery and Ultimate Frisbee, students can join a wide variety of sports clubs. The university has invested £1.7 million in floodlit, all-weather pitches and also offers well-equipped gyms at Avery Hill and Medway. You can also join fitness classes, including Zumba and yoga. 

Careers and Employability 
From day one the Employability and Careers Service is here to support you, with one-to-one guidance, workshops and employer events, you will develop the skills and confidence needed to stand out in today’s competitive job market. You can get advice on CVs, interview practice or finding part-time work and placements so you are supported to become a great graduate.

University of Greenwich International College (UGIC) is a dedicated college located in Bounty House just a 10 minute walk from the main campus. We offer integrated and standalone pathway programmes which develop your academic and English language skills.

Our international college is part of the university campus so you will have access to all the same university spaces, facilities and community so you will feel like you are part of the university from the day you start.
